[it's a goddamn maze in here. you have a sense at least of consistent downward movement, like you're heading deep underground. your light crosses small office doors set at regular intervals as you turn and walk and turn again, but all of them are unlabelled. some have suspicious marks on them now and again though: dark stains, bullet holes, great splintering gouges from blades or claws.]

[he gives each wound a dissatisfied, knowing look, but doesn't give in to the temptation to stop walking. he does at least have a strong belief that Charon is not behind any of those doors.

he will follow the bloody footprints wherever they lead him in this maze, though he does have the sense to mentally keep track of how many twists and turns he's taken]

[eventually the footprints fade out. they haven't led you to a definitive door, just the middle of a random hallway, so you might feel stymied for a moment.

a black cat pads into the field of light and looks up at you, tilting its head. one of its silver eyes flashes red where your light hits it.]

[bends down and offers the cat a hand to sniff. that's only polite]

Can you take me to where Charon is?

[between one blink and the next, it's Charon's younger brother instead]

Why should I?

[startles at the sudden change, and straightens up]

Because I'm looking for him. I want to make sure he's okay.

Ugh, you shouldn't worry about that guy so much...he'll be fine.

[something about the absolute casualness of the comment after the last several days of not sleeping and constant worrying and dead-end plans and running into the mist to fight a demon lady prompts the ugliest, choked laugh]

Even if he'll be fine. I'd like to see him, please.

And how do I know you won't hurt him when you get there?

[tiredly,]

Why would I hurt him? I'm here to make sure he's okay. What exactly do you think I'd do to him?

[spreads his hands and gestures to himself]

I don't have any items on me in here. No weapons, no mana boosters, no skills that can do a damn thing. I don't want to hurt him, I wouldn't hurt him, and I couldn't hurt him even if for some godforsaken reason I decided I wanted to. He's safe. We brought him home.

[he rolls his eyes and thrusts a hand at Lethe.]

Anyone can say words. But we're in his mind and heart, yeah? Just show me.

With what? What kind of stupid, arbitrary emotion is going to satisfy you?

[he grabs the hand that's shoved at him but the only memory he can think of over and over and over and over and over and over again is the moment when he saw that the mist had cleared and the staff was in Ananke's hand and the world dropped out from under him

he thinks about waking up in a doll instead of his body and feeling a hysterical, overwhelming fondness so big that it hurts, and it's so, so stupid to feel that way at that exact moment but he does anyway

he thinks about going into the mist and knowing that there was no other option but to bring him back. and they did. he just needs to wake up.]

I thought you were the smart brother.

[anyway he yanks his hand back, scowling, like he's been burned by the concept of someone feeling that kind of fondness for his big brother]

You're not doing a great job as a guard, you know. Shouldn't you have a list of people who are fine to pass through?
