[when he touches, he gets a brief impression of the woods around the pasture, of taking some kind of raking blow--but without the pain, since he didn't open the door.

eventually the footprints fade out. they haven't led you to a definitive door, just the middle of a random hallway, so you might feel stymied for a moment.
